2011
The year 2011 was exciting for me:
Sport - raced 20 races and won 14!!!
Work - started working at the WC for the Ceour d´Alene tribe in Idaho / Blake started full time at Birds of Prey Northwest / Biestmilch USA is launched
Family - first year anniversary, love you honey / loved the visit of my 95 year old Oma / Sinje got her own place / Mom did her first race
Fun - won my first cook off with a split pea sound / did my first eating competition and made it on the "Wall of Pain"
... and lots more. I must say, it was a challenging year, but lots of fun. Thank you to everyone that crossed my path! Love my family --- Kjell

6 Strength Training Exercises for the Offseason
"Dave Scott: As a season progresses, and an athlete’s strength level increases, they tend to develop dominant muscles while the support muscles get neglected. When you neglect those smaller muscles, they start to shut down. So even though someone’s performance is going up, athletes are always hovering on the brink of injury. Athletes should work on both the small muscle groups and the larger muscle groups to help create balance. ..." [source: active.com by: Michelle Valenti] --- Kjell

My work
"The Benewah Medical and Wellness Center (BMC/WC) is located in Benewah County in the Panhandle of Idaho on the Coeur d’Alene Indian Reservation. This county has the highest number of minorities of any county in the State of Idaho. Poverty, unemployment, and geographic isolation initially characterized the service area. Almost a third of our users are below 200% of t he Federal poverty guidelines. Clinic users are about 50% Indian and 50% non-Indian. Approximately 40% of our patients have no insurance. Benewah County also typically has the highest unemployment rate in Idaho, and over double the national unemployment rate. Eleven percent of BMC patients are 65 or older. There has been significant economic improvement to the service area in the last 5 years, although conditions continue to exist that warrant continued access for the underserved population. Many in the community continue to be underinsured or have no insurance at all. ..." (source: BMC) --- Kjell

It is OFFSEASON
"The leaves have turned. The air is crisp. The medals from a summer's worth of triathlons are pinned to your board in the kitchen. But now the calendar is blank until the end of the year. Should you be racing in the offseason? If so, what races should you pick to enter?
Ask a few people and you will get a surprisingly diverse set of answers. To arrive at the best answer, you will need to decide what is most important to you. Consider which of these three (very different) goals is at the top of your list:
- Build the right base for next year.
- Strengthen your run.
- Stay fit, but having some fun. ..." [source: active.com / author: Paul Tyler] --- Kjell

How to Learn From Your Triathlon Season
"After months of training hard and racing harder, it's tempting to quickly switch into offseason mode and turn your attention to new activities.
But before you pack up the bike and put away the swim fins, you owe it to yourself to thoroughly review what happened (and what didn't) during the race season. This allows you to build on your recent experiences and create an even more rewarding, faster and successful triathlon season next time. ..." [source: active.com author: Chris Janzen] --- Kjell

Great read: "I get asked all the time about my typical training week, and my answer is always the same: there is no typical training week. I build on what I call a skeleton, but the specifics are based on how I feel that week. That’s why I’ve gotten the “fluffy” label. Everybody else thinks you set a routine and then gut through it no matter how tired you are or how much you hurt. That’s not how I do things. Dreaded Bonk
"Often, people associate the word “bonk” with “hitting the wall” during endurance events. For endurance athletes it is a sudden and overwhelming feeling of running out of energy. You were running or riding along at what seemed like a manageable pace, then seemingly without warning your legs turned to cement. With heavy legs, a body-wide feeling of fatigue and sometimes dizziness, you are forced to stop." The Importance of Raw Foods for Athletes
"... Unfortunately, in today's world the concept of diet has extended beyond what one eats to how they live and the identity that gets associated with it. Winderthon
My start in 3 Marathons in 6 weeks.
"The marathon is a long-distance running event with an official distance of 42.195 kilometres (26 miles and 385 yards), that is usually run as a road race. The event was instituted in commemoration of the fabled run of the Greek soldier Pheidippides, a messenger from the Battle of Marathon (the namesake of the race) to Athens.
The marathon was one of the original modern Olympic events in 1896, though the distance did not become standardized until 1921. More than 500 marathons are contested throughout the world each year, with the vast majority of competitors being recreational athletes. Larger marathons can have tens of thousands of participants." Windermere Marathon
Good fast course: "The Full Marathon starts at 7:00 a.m. on Riverbend Road in Post Falls, Idaho (by the factory outlet mall). The start will be on a five lane wide flat road, then loop through a modern corporate/industrial park before entering the Centennial Trail 2.1 miles into the race.
The Centennial Trail is an asphalt path, 12 feet wide in most places, that follows the Spokane River. The course is gently rolling with a net elevation drop of approximately 239 feet. In mid-May, the river flows full with white water which is audible as well as visible! The Trail crosses the river twice before entering Riverfront Park and twice within the Park. The course runs through the campus of Gonzaga University just before entering Spokane's beautiful Riverfront Park." [source: WindermereMarathon] In a good week, I can take off --- Kjell

BMC
My new job: "The Benewah Medical and Wellness Center (BMC/WC) is located in Benewah County in the Panhandle of Idaho on the Coeur d’Alene Indian Reservation. " [source: BMC] --- Kjell

"Writing on the Run"
"... Collins had come to the United States on a college track scholarship, but running had been a means to an end for him, a way to get out of Ireland in the 1980s. Although his athletic career showed promise, he gave up the sport after graduating from Notre Dame in 1986.
Collins didn't return to running for nearly a decade when, six weeks after the stabbing, he signed up for the Chicago Marathon. The race was a mere week away. Powered by his commuter mileage, he ran a 2:30, good for 39th place. That performance reignited a passion for the sport that pushed him toward ultra distances. "I like the spirit of old explorers," he says. "Go and see if you can survive." ... " [author: Araina Bond // source: active] I got my best ideas running/biking/swimming --- Kjell

Is Running in the Cold Bad for Your Lungs?
I knew it "Have you ever heard your mom or coach warn you not to run in the cold? "You'll freeze your lungs if you run in that frigid air," they say. You've maybe even thought it yourself: At what temperature will the cold air damage your lungs? Research shows that runners are not in danger of freezing their lungs, even in the coldest places on Earth such as the North and South Poles. Thanks to our body's brilliant design and adaptability, air reaches body temperature by the time it greets our lungs." [By Amanda McCracken - D3Multisport.com] Enjoy your run --- Kjell

Experiment by Kjell Schiöberg, our Chef de Cuisine
There are so many guidelines recommending race nutrition. They all claim to be the best option, but at the end everybody has to make his/her own experience. The twelve days if Christmas
"The Twelve Days of Christmas is probably the most misunderstood part of the church year among Christians who are not part of liturgical church traditions. Contrary to much popular belief, these are not the twelve days before Christmas, but in most of the Western Church are the twelve days from Christmas until the beginning of Epiphany (January 6th; the 12 days count from December 25th until January 5th). In some traditions, the first day of Christmas begins on the evening of December 25th with the following day considered the First Day of Christmas (December 26th). In these traditions, the twelve days begin December 26 and include Epiphany on January 6." [source: Dennis Bratcher] --- Kjell
